Sakhalin Oil & Gas
Sakhalin is a Russian island located amongst the north-eastern Sakhalin shelf of the Sea of Okhotsk. This frozen hotspot is famous for its vast quantities of oil and natural gas nestled kilometres below ground. Among Sakhalin’s oil and gas operations are, most notably, Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2. Northern Sea Route
Vessels transitting from ports in Europe to those in Asia via the Northern Sea Route en lieu of the Suez Canal Route are able to halve transit times, reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and finally reduce the risk of piracy through the avoidance of regions prone to piracy such as those about the Horn of Africa. Arctic Transit
Years of Arctic sea ice recession have yielded periods of ice-free transit for passages that would have normally required year-round icebreaker assistance. The future navigability of the Arctic waters is visualized with respect to the extent of today's Arctic ice cap. (2012)
